Ethernet Cable - Color Coding Diagram

The information listed here is to assist Network Administrators in the color coding of Ethernet cables. Please be aware that modifying Ethernet cables improperly may cause loss of network connectivity. Use this information at your own risk, and insure all connectors and cables are modified in accordance with standards. The Internet Centre and its affiliates cannot be held liable for the use of this information in whole or in part.
T-568A Straight-Through Ethernet Cable
The TIA/EIA 568-A standard which was ratified in 1995, was replaced by the TIA/EIA 568-B standard in 2002 and has been updated since. Both standards define the T-568A and T-568B pin-outs for using Unshielded Twisted Pair cable and RJ-45 connectors for Ethernet connectivity. The standards and pin-out specification appear to be related and interchangeable, but are not the same and should not be used interchangeably.
T-568B Straight-Through Ethernet Cable
Both the T-568A and the T-568B standard Straight-Through cables are used most often as patch cords for your Ethernet connections. If you require a cable to connect two Ethernet devices directly together without a hub or when you connect two hubs together, you will need to use a Crossover cable instead.
RJ-45 Crossover Ethernet Cable
A good way of remembering how to wire a Crossover Ethernet cable is to wire one end using the T-568A standard and the other end using the T-568B standard. Another way of remembering the color coding is to simply switch the Green set of wires in place with the Orange set of wires. Specifically, switch the solid Green (G) with the solid Orange, and switch the green/white with the orange/white.
Ethernet Cable Instructions:
  1. Pull the cable off the reel to the desired length and cut. If you are pulling cables through holes, its easier to attach the RJ-45 plugs after the cable is pulled. The total length of wire segments between a PC and a hub or between two PC's cannot exceed 100 Meters (328 feet) for 100BASE-TX and 300 Meters for 10BASE-T.
  2. Start on one end and strip the cable jacket off (about 1") using a stripper or a knife. Be extra careful not to nick the wires, otherwise you will need to start over.
  3. Spread, untwist the pairs, and arrange the wires in the order of the desired cable end. Flatten the end between your thumb and forefinger. Trim the ends of the wires so they are even with one another, leaving only 1/2" in wire length. If it is longer than 1/2" it will be out-of-spec and susceptible to crosstalk. Flatten and insure there are no spaces between wires.
  4. Hold the RJ-45 plug with the clip facing down or away from you. Push the wires firmly into the plug. Inspect each wire is flat even at the front of the plug. Check the order of the wires. Double check again. Check that the jacket is fitted right against the stop of the plug. Carefully hold the wire and firmly crimp the RJ-45 with the crimper.
  5. Check the color orientation, check that the crimped connection is not about to come apart, and check to see if the wires are flat against the front of the plug. If even one of these are incorrect, you will have to start over. Test the Ethernet cable.
Ethernet Cable Tips:
  • A straight-thru cable has identical ends.
  • A crossover cable has different ends.
  • A straight-thru is used as a patch cord in Ethernet connections.
  • A crossover is used to connect two Ethernet devices without a hub or for connecting two hubs.
  • A crossover has one end with the Orange set of wires switched with the Green set.
  • Odd numbered pins are always striped, even numbered pins are always solid colored.
  • Looking at the RJ-45 with the clip facing away from you, Brown is always on the right, and pin 1 is on the left.
  • No more than 1/2" of the Ethernet cable should be untwisted otherwise it will be susceptible to crosstalk.
  • Do not deform, do not bend, do not stretch, do not staple, do not run parallel with power cables, and do not run Ethernet cables near noise inducing components.
Basic Theory:

By looking at a T-568A UTP Ethernet straight-thru cable and an Ethernet crossover cable with a T-568B end, we see that the TX (transmitter) pins are connected to the corresponding RX (receiver) pins, plus to plus and minus to minus. You can also see that both the blue and brown wire pairs on pins 4, 5, 7, and 8 are not used in either standard. What you may not realize is that, these same pins 4, 5, 7, and 8 are not used or required in 100BASE-TX as well. So why bother using these wires, well for one thing its simply easier to make a connection with all the wires grouped together. Otherwise you'll be spending time trying to fit those tiny little wires into each of the corresponding holes in the RJ-45 connector.

How To Connect Two Monitors in One Computer

In many professions, including graphic design, architecture, communications, accounting, engineering and video editing, the idea of two or more monitors being driven from one machine is not a new one. While in the past, it has meant multiple graphics adapters and specialized software, it was common for engineers to have at least two, if not more, displays to enhance productivity.

Now that multiple-monitor setups are more budget-friendly, it is not uncommon to see a wide range of business professionals using multiple monitors to increase visual area. This advantage helps promote the concept of a paperless office by increasing the quantity of simultaneous media that can be viewed digitally, although the advantage of viewing two documents simultaneously is also feasible on many larger widescreen monitors.

Tsunami ripple in Chennai: Mails spread rumours of radiation showers

CHENNAI: The city has seen an aftershock of the Japanese tsunami.
These weren't seismic tremors but mere rumors. The earthquake and the
subsequent nuclear blast in Japan have started a series of rumors in
the city asking people not to go out in the rain lest they get caught
in radioactive showers which could cause skin cancers and other
    ailments.

These rumors and chain mails started by unknown sources warn people
from going out in the rain as "radioactive particles, which may cause
burns, alopecia or even cancer, may be in the rain." The mails warn
people to use raincoats, umbrellas and scarves even if there is only a
light drizzle, as even some part of the allegedly radioactive waters
    could be harmful.

Experts have rubbished these rumors saying there is no scientific or
logical basis to these rumors. "There have been blasts but the amounts
of radiation released are definitely not high enough to affect people
in India," said Dr M Srinivasan, former associate director of the
physics group at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

He added that even in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, one of the worst
nuclear power plant accidents in history where huge amounts of
radiation was released, only the neigbouring countries were affected.
No other part of the world was affected. "Even the idea that a
radiation leak in Japan could affect us is ridiculous. We are very
    very far away," he said.

Unless the amount of radiation released was immense, and there were
heavy winds blowing in the direction of India, it was impossible for
India to be affected, he said. "Even then given how far away from
Japan India is, we are not at risk," he said.

Experts also said that as India was not even among the countries which
had been issued earthquake or tsunami warnings after the earthquake in
Japan and it was impossible for us to be affected. They felt that such
baseless rumors must be curbed and instead of creating panic, people
must focus on what they could do to help quake victims.

    THE HISTORY OF VALENTINE'S DAY

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.

The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed.

Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February -- Valentine's Day -- should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)
Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap".

    What is Email Marketing?

Email Marketing is the process of using emails to generate income. This can be done by sending out sales messages to individuals on a one-to-one basis. However, to exploit the leverage capabilities of the internet, email marketing can be made much more effective by using an Autoresponder.

Email marketing using autoresponders relies on the marketing building up a list of people's email addresses. Marketing messages are then sent to this list. Each message will include one or more links to web pages where products are for sale.

There are two ways that emails can be sent using an autoresponder. First individual emails can be crafted using effective copywriting techniques and then sent out on an ad hoc basis to all the people on a list. They can also be sent to a sub-set of the people on a list. For example, they could be sent only to existing customers or only to people living in the US and Canada.

The second way that email marketers use autoresponders is to set up a sequence of emails that get sent out in series after a pre-set time interval. For example, the first email message in a series could be sent out 1 day after someone subscribes to a newsletter and the second message in a series could be sent out 4 days after they subscribed and so on.

The process of reminding people about marketing offers by using emailing systems is known to boost profitability substantially.

There are also two other features of email marketing that make it highly attractive to businesses.

The whole process is highly measurable. Good emailing systems will report back to you how many people opened the emails you sent out and how many clicked the links in them. You can also split the messages sent to a list into several groups to find out which email generated the most profit.

The cost of emailing is negligibly small because sending emails effectively costs nothing. There is however a time cost in writing good emails in the first place.

It is important to comply with local emailing laws when using email marketing and specifically to make sure that you comply with the CAN-SPAM laws in the US.

    What is an Internet Conversion?

Conversion is the marketing process of getting people on your site to do what you want them to do such as subscribing to a list, making a purchase or visiting another speciifc part of a website. In other words it is a key measure of any internet-based business. The more sales conversions you are getting the better. Likewise if you a trying to build a list to market to, the number of subscribers you can get will directly impact on your ultimate profitability.

For the vast majority of websites conversion rates are extremely poor and one reason for this is that they are usually designed to look good rather that to act as direct marketing machines.

Conversion levels on sites are effected by a vast array of things including the wording, or copy, on the site, the images that are used on the site, whether there are any Testimonials on the site and critically the source of traffic.

A strongly converting website will make it very easy for the visitor to know what to do next and will limit other options. Good websites that convert well are also usually the result of targeted traffic, effective copy and continuous testing. There is little or no point in driving untargeted traffic to a website and expecting it to convert well which is why the source of web traffic is also key. If you sell epoxy resin it is very unlikely that an internet user taken at random will be interested in buying some.

A number of marketing tools can increase the conversion rates of a site such as autoresponders. These market to sales prospects automatically by sending out sales messages via email. Over time it is usually found that, provided the sales messages are well crafted, the overall sales rate of a website will increase if an autoresponder is used - although very few businesses make use of them.

The facts are that people who use autoresponders can drive up their visitor values which makes them a lot more profitable.
