Setup and configuration for New Blogger Tag Cloud / Label Cloud

Here is the code and setup information to use the Label Cloud in New Blogger.
First you obviously have to have a blog on New Blogger, and you MUST be using the layouts templates,
(this isn't available for classic templates, or FTP published blogs ) and you must have some posts labeled already. (There needs to be at least ONE label with more than ONE entry or the scripts hit a bug - so have at least one label with more than one entry before starting).

Make sure you backup your template before making any changes!

Log into Blogger and go to your layouts section. On the 'Page Elements' setup page
make sure you have a label widget already installed where you want it (it can be moved around
later). Then go to the Edit HTML settings and leave the widgets NOT exapanded. It will make
things easier to deal with.

Now the code comes in 3 parts. A section for the stylesheet, a configurations section,
and then the actual widget itself.

The first part to put in is the stylesheet section. The following code needs to be copied
and inserted into your stylesheet, which in the layouts is marked out by the tags.
Easiest thing to do is find the closing skin tag

]]>

and place the code right BEFORE that.
Here it is, copy and paste without modification right now. I'll explain what can be tweaked
later.

/* Label Cloud Styles
----------------------------------------------- */
#labelCloud {text-align:center;font-family:arial,sans-serif;}
#labelCloud .label-cloud li{display:inline;background-image:none !important;padding:0 5px;margin:0;vertical-align:baseline !important;border:0 !important;}
#labelCloud ul{list-style-type:none;margin:0 auto;padding:0;}
#labelCloud a img{border:0;display:inline;margin:0 0 0 3px;padding:0}
#labelCloud a{text-decoration:none}
#labelCloud a:hover{text-decoration:underline}
#labelCloud li a{}
#labelCloud .label-cloud {}
#labelCloud .label-count {padding-left:0.2em;font-size:9px;color:#000}
#labelCloud .label-cloud li:before{content:"" !important}

This next section is the configuration section for the Cloud. It also goes in the head
of the template, but outside of the stylesheet part. Easiest thing to do again is to find
the closing stylesheet tag

]]>

But this time place the code right AFTER that line, but BEFORE the tag. Here it is.

All of these settings can be changed but I'll explain them in a moment. The defaults will work for now.

Now the widget itself. Scroll down and find the label widget in your sidebar. It should look
something like this.

Copy the following code (from beginning widget tag to ending widget tag) and replace
the line above with it.

Now if all has gone well, and you have posts already labeled, then if you preview the
blog you should see some form of the Cloud appearing. If it doesn't appear, then something
went wrong. You should probably back out and try it again from the start.

Update : I've found 2 things to check for first if the label cloud isn't showing. First make sure that at least one of your labels has more than one entry. A bug in the script causes it to fail when all the labels have only one entry.(As soon as any label has more than one entry, then it should be ok from then on) Also, make sure that none of your labels contain quote marks " . Apostrophes or single ticks ' are ok. ------

Most likely the cloud with it's default settings won't be what you ultimately want. But all
the colors and sizes are configurable to match your tastes. If the cloud is appearing in preview
then you can go about changing some of the variables so they suit.

The settings in the Variables section will be where you make most of your adjustments. Here I'll
explain what each setting does.

var cloudMin= 1;

This setting you can use to limit the number of labels shown (for example if you have a lot of labels). Leave the setting at 1 to show ALL labels. If you enter in a higher number, then only labels that have at least that number of entries will appear in the cloud.

var maxFontSize = 20;
var maxColor = [0,0,255];
var minFontSize = 10;
var minColor = [0,0,0];
var lcShowCount = false;

The lines for
maxFontSize
maxColor
do what you may think they do. The first one sets the size (in pixels) of the label with the
most amount entries. The maxColor sets the color of that entry (in RGB format). Similiar with
the next two
minFontSize
minColor
Just these are for the label with the least amount of entries. Again the size is in pixels,
the color is in RGB format. Any labels between the two will get their color/sizes based on
how many labels they are, and where their entry count falls, giving the much desired cloud
effect.

From my experimenting, there are many factors that make up a pleasant looking cloud. From
color/size choice, to the number of actual labels, to how well dispersed the entries are amoung
the labels. 3 Labels don't make a good cloud as there isn't much to work with. You just have
to experiment around to see what looks good with your setup.

IMPORTANT, when change the color settings, Keep them in the format supplied. In between the [] and
the numbers separated by commas. The default colors are BLUE for the max and BLACK for the min.
You can select any valid RGB color combination. If you don't know what RGB colors are, don't
worry. It's just a way of defining a color. You can use many charts on the Internet to
get the correct RGB value for the color you want to try. Here's one that is fairly good.

RGB Color Code Chart

Remember, if you get the 3 sets of numbers to enter them in correctly. Inside the [ ] separated by
commas.

Also experiment with different font sizes. Again it depends on how many entries, how dispersed
they are, and how much room for the cloud is available as to what looks good.

The last variable there is

lcShowCount

This can either be false (default) or true. All this does is turn off/on the post count displayed
next to the label. Usually in a 'traditional' cloud the count isn't used. But if you go to a
'flat' listing then it's sometimes useful to turn it on.

Now to the CSS section. Most people won't need to tweak these much, and it's not necessary to
understand what all those entries are for. Most are just to make sure that other styling
elements from the rest of your page don't inherit in and ruin the cloud. But there are a few
that you may want to change to suit.
The first line

#labelCloud {text-align:center;font-family:arial,sans-serif;}

You could change the fonts used in the cloud here if you wanted.
Also, the text-align statement can also be changed. I have it set to center by default but you
could use

text-align:justify;
text-align:right;
text-align:left;

If those suit better.

The next line

#labelCloud .label-cloud li{display:inline;background-image:none !important;padding:0 5px;margin:0;vertical-align:baseline !important;border:0 !important;}

Well don't worry about most of it unless you are a hardcore CSS'er. The only one of real
importance is the first entry

display:inline;

You can change that to

display:block;

To get the 'Flat' (each entry on it's own separate line) listing of the weighted entries.
Usually if that is set to block you would probably want to change the sort frequency from
alphabetical to frequency. You do that by editing the widget from the Page Elements tab in
Blogger.

And the last bit I'll mention is the line

#labelCloud .label-count

If you set the lcShowCount variable to true to show the post counts, you could change the
color/size of those numbered entries with that line.

How Google AdSense Is Essential For Webmasters & Publishers

How Google AdSense Program Works?

The publisher (webmaster) inserts a javascript code into a certain website. Each time the page is accessed, the java script will pull advertisements from the Adsense program. The ads that are targeted should therefore be related to the content that is contained on the web page serving the ad. If a visitor clicks on an advertisement, the webmaster serving the ad earns a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying the search engine for the click.

Benefits of Google AdSense Program

  • The search engine is the one handling all the tracking and payments, providing an easy way for webmasters to display content-sensitive and targeted ads without the hassle to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor the clicks and statistics which could be a time-consuming task. It seems that there is never a shortage of advertisers in the program from which Google pulls Adsense ads. Also webmasters can be less concerned by the lack of information search engines are providing and can focus more on the value of their websites.
  • Google AdSense has already come a long way in understanding the needs of publishers and webmasters. Together with its continuous progression is the appearance of more advanced system that allows full ad customization.Webmasters are given the chance to choose from many different types of text ad formats to better complement their website and fit their webpage layout.
  • The different formatting of ads enables site owners to customize ads look and feel exactly like the website design and colors; thus making the AdSense program website-design compatible.
  • The ability of the Adsense publishers to track not only how their sites are progressing but also the earnings based on the webmaster-defined channels.
  • The recent improvements in the search engines gives webmasters the capability to monitor how their ads are performing using customizable reports that has the capacity to provide detailed page impressions, clicks and click-through rates.
  • Webmasters and publishers can now track specific ad formats, colors and pages within a website. Trends are also easily spotted. With the real-time reporting at hand, the effectiveness of the changes made will be assessed quickly. There would be time to sort out the content that people are making the most clicks on. The ever-changing demands would be met while generating cash for the webmasters and publishers. The flexible tools are also allowing webmasters to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, which will provide them some accurate insight on which pages, ads and domains are performing best.
  • The advertisers have realized the benefits associated having their ads served on targeted websites. Thus increasing the possibility that a prospective web surfer will have an interest in their product and services.
  • Who are not using Adsense in their sites, they are given the option of having other people do their advertisement for them, giving them the benefit of having successful and money-generating web sites.
  • Adsense is all about targeted content, the more targeted your content is, the more relevant the search engines’ ads will be. There are some web masters and publishers who are focused more on their site contents and how best to maintain them rather than the cash that the ads will generate for them. This is the part where the effectiveness is working its best.

How Much You Can Earn By Google AdSense

When I started displaying Google AdSense at my website I wondered that how much will I be earning from Google Adsense. I mean nobody like much ads at his clean website. You are giving some sacrifice by displaying some ads. But then if you now look at Google Adsense Program, it is more refined now. More accurate. More beneficial. Its not a bad idea to offer your website users other options to browse about your own website related content. Now when ads are displayed at any page, links related to your content are generated not only maximizing your website potential but also you earn ofcourse besides quality links options from quality product based websites too.

Ever wondered how much you can earn from Google AdSense? Ever doubted from somebody who claimed that he can be rich just from online business or online advertisement?

Google Adsense is perhaps No.1 ads placement resourceful service over the internet. Look at this guy's check and notice how much he has earned from Google Adsense, and this photo is his September 2005 check from Google AdSense.

Blog/Website Online Performance Testing Tool

website-test-tool

Pingdom offers cost-effective and reliable server, network and website monitoring. The service includes statistics for uptime and response time, and can send out alerts via SMS and email. The Full Page Test loads a complete HTML page including all objects (images, CSS, JavaScripts, RSS, Flash and frames/iframes). It mimics the way a page is loaded in a web browser. I liked their free tool which crawls your website and tells you about web pages load time. Tool's Main features are;

  • The load time of all objects is shown visually with time bars.
  • You can view the list of objects either in load order or as a hierarchy.
  • The hierarchy view allows you to see which objects are linked to in for example a CSS file.
  • Every test also shows general statistics about the loaded page such as the total number of objects, total load time, and size including all objects.

7 Tips on how to get a raise

1. Do a better job than is expected of you. One and all, the experts agree that this is the prime essential to advancement. In other words, give more and you'll get more.
2. Make sure you do the job your boss wants done. As the personnel manager of one large firm says: "You can do the best job in the world, but if it's not the one your boss wants, he will find it upsetting."
3. Get along with your fellow workers and others with whom you come in contact. This is very important. Many times people work against themselves in terms of their personality — and, of course, they seldom realize that they're doing it.
4. Be sure your boss knows what you're accomplishing. Often when a fellow isn't appreciated, it's simply a matter of lack of communication.
5. Be able to make decisions. This, according to the president of a job consultant firm, is a must. "You'd be surprised what a rare trait this is," he says. "Most people do just what they're told and pass all the decisions on to the next fellow."
6. Look for responsibilities beyond your present assignment. The manager of an executive recruiting firm strongly recommends this to the young person on the" way up. "A young tiger in the accounting department might say to her chief, "If you need any help in the credit union plan, just let me know." In from five to seven years, this expert predicts, "she'll be head of the plan."\
7. Study at night and keep well-informed. "It's also wise," adds another personnel officer, "to get involved in the community you live in. I don't mean just joining things, but really contributing your talents to the library, the hospital, and any good fund-raising project that comes along."
This man's own superior says, "Someday, somebody will say to you, "Joe, what are they paying you in your company? Well, why don't you come with us? We can do better than that for you."

6 Simple Tips To Increase Your Adsense Income

1. Design a professional looking blog.
2. Put quality contents. Don't just copy and paste. Instead summarized or elaborate.
3. Submit your blog to Technorati, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.
4. Put your ads in strategic location, above the folds is advisable. Don't put too many ads on your page as to annoy your visitors. I also would advice you to blend in your ads with the design of your site.
5. Get yourself a Google Analytics account so that you a birds eye view on where your traffic is coming from, what keywords are they coming in, etc.
6. Try to interact with your visitors by placing polls, forum, chatbox, guestbook.

Google AdSense Tips

Tip #1: Don't put ads on empty pages.
If you don't have any content, then, Google will have to guess as what your page is about. It may guess wrong, and so the ads that it displays may not be relevant. You'll have to wait until Google re-crawls the site for the ads to correct themselves.
Tip #2: Don't be afraid to ask questions
If you're wondering about something, don't be afraid to ask Google. So far, they've always responded to my questions within a working day. There are two email addresses to use, depending on the type of question:
Tip #3: Avoid non-English characters on English pages
Normally, this wouldn't be an issue. But on some pages the presence of the accented characters is enough to cause AdSense to display non-relevant ads. This happens whether the browser indicates a preference or not.
Tip #4: Check your keyword density
Although Google doesn't release exact details as to how they determine the ads to serve on a given page, they do tell us that it's the text content of the page that matters, not the meta tags. Before serving ads on a page, then, you might want to check its keyword density.

The Facts About AdSense

1. You make automatic money with AdSense.
Small as well as large websites can get AdSense ads on them. Whenever someone clicks on an ad on your site, you get paid.
2. Content-targeting technology means AdSense ads are relevant to your site's traffic.
Google uses automatic content-targeting technology to select what ads will appear on your site.
3. Google sells your advertising space for you.
Google has a massive network of over 200,000 advertisers using its AdWords advertising system and when AdWords ads appear on your site they are called AdSense.
4. You can maximize your AdSense profits if you understand how the program works in detail.
AdSense is underpinned by Google's AdWords system and in short, if you know how to get high paying AdWords ads on your site, you will get ads on your site that pay you a lot per click.

Getting Started With Google Adsense

Getting started with AdSense is easy, but when reviewing the applications we get, we've noticed a few common pitfalls. To help make sure your application is approved the first time around, ask yourself the following questions below before submitting.
Do I have what I need to apply?
Website: To display Google ads, you need administrative access to the site you submit for AdSense in order to place our JavaScript ad code on your site. Adding the Google code to your site's source code will enable you to show ads, search boxes, and referral units on your pages.
If you don't have a website of your own, that doesn't mean you can't participate in AdSense. We offer a couple of options to help you easily create your own site.
First, there's Blogger, a free tool for setting up and publishing your own blog online. With its easy-to-use and customizable templates, you can create an account and start blogging right away. You can also set up AdSense ads easily through your Blogger account.
If you prefer more flexibility and control, then our web page tool, Page Creator, may be more suitable. Signing up for a Page Creator account is free as well -- all you need is a Gmail account. The best part is that you don't have to download any software or hire a designer. Once you've created your Page Creator site, you can begin displaying Google ads in minutes.
Valid payee name: Payments will be made out to the name on your account, so make sure to include your full and valid name, or that of your business, rather than just initials. If banks won't accept the name you enter in the 'Payee Name' field, neither will we.
Valid address: We want to make sure your hard-earned money reaches you, so please also provide a complete valid address where you can receive mail. If you live in a country or territory that doesn't have a standard format for addresses, please be sure that your application includes as much information as a mailman would need to find your residence.
Does my website meet all the necessary requirements?
Valid URL:
If you manage an entire website, give us the URL of your home page. If you manage a blog or other account within a larger website, you should provide the URL of the specific page that you manage and not the URL of the entire hosting website. Don't forget to double check your URL for typos!

Top 10 AdSense tips

AdSense Tip #1: Find your keywords
Before serving ads on a web page, check its keyword density. A free and advanced tool for finding the most prominent keywords in a page can be found here: SEO Density Analyzer. Copy the most important keywords to a text file ([web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt).

AdSense Tip #2: Improve your keywords
Get keyword suggestions from Overture Search Inventory and from Google AdWords Sandbox. Get new keywords that can help you improve your ad relevance. Enter the keywords from [web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt and save the suggestions to [web page name]-adsense-suggestions.txt.

AdSense Tip #3: Keep your website focused on a theme
Use the keyword suggestions to enhance your web pages and to build theme-based content. And also try to get your keywords into the anchor text of your incoming links as much as possible. Don't forget that Google AdSense is keyword-targeted advertising: Google AdSense bases its advert topics on your websites content, this means that content-rich websites of a popular topic should attract a large amount of ads.

AdSense Tip #4: Write a new page every day
One of the best tips is to add a new page to your web site every day. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get. Put an Adsense unit on each and every content page of your site. But where? You will find more about that from the next AdSense tips.

AdSense Tip #5: Choose the right AdSense format
Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:
1. 336x280 large rectangle
2. 300x250 medium rectangle
3. 160x600 wide skyscraper
Another successful format is the 468x15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.

AdSense Tip #6: Color tips
When creating your Google AdSense ads it is recommended to use the color scheme and style of your website so that the ads blend in well. Ads without background color and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background color.
Create a custom AdSense palette:
* border color = background color of your web site
* background color = background color of your web site
* link color = blue, color of your links
* url color = black, #999999
* text color = black, #333333, color of your main content
You can also rotate your color palette: select multiple color palettes that blend with your site to create variety.

AdSense Tip #7: Position tips
Visitors tend to look at the big headlines to see if your page is worth reading. If you get them interested, they will read the text and look for your navigation links.
Place the AdSense ads in a prominent place around the top/left part of your page or under your headlines, where your visitors are most likely to look at.
If you have an article page with a long body of text, the bottom of that article is a good place for AdSense ads because your visitors read the text and then they want more resources.

AdSense Tip #8: Increase the number of ads, but not too much
If you have a lot of text on a page, use multiple AdSense units. You can use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes and one unit of ad links.
Link units allow the user to refine what they're interested in. So if they may not be interested in specific ads on your page, they might be interested in a particular topic, and by clicking on a link unit and a link in the link unit, they'll be able to specify that they're interested in that specific topic and get a lot more options and variety on the ads that might appear.
AdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won't lose your visitors.

AdSense Tip #9: Preview Google ads
You can find out what ads will be served by Google AdSense if you install Google AdSense Preview Tool, a very simple tool available only for Internet Explorer 6.0. Click to advertiser sites without generating invalid clicks, and easily add their URLs to your URL filter list. Because AdSense uses geo-targeting, Google serves different ads for other countries. Instead of faking your IP or travelling abroad to test your ads, use this AdSense tool to see what ads see your visitors from France, Germany or other countries.
There may be no Google AdSense ads available for your webpage, so Googlw will display Public Service Ads. You can hide them using alternate colors or images. Make sure you include the image in a simple html file as a link (use target="_top"). The image size should be the same as the dimension of AdSense units. In the alternate url box, enter the absolute url of the html file.
Read more about alternate ads.

AdSense Tip #10: What not to do
* Don't click on your own ads
* Don't ask others to click on your Google ads
* Don't manually change AdSense code
* Don't place Google ads on sites that include prohibited content (e.g.: adult sites)
* Don't employ cloaking, hidden text or farm links
* Don't use AdSense ads on the same page with similar ads (e.g.: Yahoo Publisher Network)

Tips for more efficient Google Searches

For millions of people, Google is an indispensable search tool that they use every day, in all facets of their lives. From work or school, research, to looking up movies and celebrities to news and gossip, Google is the go-to search engine.

But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.

Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.

1. Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. [dumb | little | man]

2. Quotes. If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man".

3. Not. If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb".

4. Similar terms. Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man".

5. Wildcard. The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. [can't * me love lyrics] will return the Beatles song you're looking for. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains, such as
educational information: ["dumb little man" research *.edu].

6. Advanced search. If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.

7. Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

8. Calculator. One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

9. Numrange. This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).

10. Site-specific. Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman.com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog.

11. Backlinks. The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

12. Vertical search. Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more:

Blog Search
Book Search
Scholar
Catalogs
Code Search
Directory
Finance
Images
Local/Maps
News
Patent Search
Product Search
Video

13. Movies. Use the "movie:" operator to search for a movie title along with either a zip code or U.S. city and state to get a list of movie theaters in the area and show times.

14. Music. The "music:" operator returns content related to music only.

15. Unit converter. Use Google for a quick conversion, from yards to meters for example, or different currency: [12 meters in yards]

16. Types of numbers: Google algorithms can recognize patterns in numbers you enter, so you can search for:

o Telephone area codes
o Vehicle ID number (US only)
o Federal Communications Commission (FCC) equipment numbers (US only)
o UPC codes
o Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airplane registration number (US only)
o Patent numbers (US only)
o Even stock quotes (using the stock symbol) or a weather forecast regarding the next five days

17. File types. If you just want to search for .PDF files, or Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets, for example, use the "filetype:" operator.

18. Location of term. By default, Google searches for your term throughout a web page. But if you just want it to search certain locations, you can use operators such as "inurl:", "intitle:", "intext:", and "inanchor:". Those search for a term only within the URL, the title, the body text, and the anchor text (the text used to describe a link).

19. Cached pages. Looking for a version of a page the Google stores on its own servers? This can help with outdated or update pages. Use the "cached:" operator.

20. Answer to life, the universe, and everything. Search for that phrase, in lower case, and Google will give you the answer.
